We’d like to introduce Kendall Willard, one of Sebago’s summer interns. Ms. Willard is from Ohio and will be a senior this year at the University of Maine, pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. She is a scholar-athlete (Track and Field) and has done an internship with a Watershed Stewardship Center. She is interning in the Project Delivery group and we are so thrilled to have her with us this summer!
Where do you go to school?
University of Maine (Orono)
What are you studying and why did you choose this major?
Civil & Environmental Engineering (with a Water Resources concentration, Math minor, and am pursuing M.E. in Water and Environment). I had always wanted a career that would help reduce our impact on the environment – I have thought of my choice in major as a practical way to use my interest in animals and nature.
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
I enjoyed my environmental courses the most during undergrad, but I especially liked Solid Waste and Air Pollution because it covered many topics in both concept and design, and we often researched areas that interested us individually.
Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?
Sand Beach or Cadillac in Acadia – some of the first places I went with my friends at the beginning of college, and had so much fun exploring the nearby trails and paths.
What three traits define you?
Disciplined, creative, and curious.
What are your hobbies?
I like to relax and read or listen to music when I can, but most of my down time is spent with the UMaine Track & Field team. I’ve done the sport since I was 8 and have done a large spread of events including sprints, jumps, and shot put, but I currently throw the javelin as my main event.
If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Being from a suburb of Cleveland, I really like the street food and fusion cuisine that you can usually get at a food truck or stand downtown. I definitely could tolerate eating something from the wide category of street food (especially tacos) for a long time.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I am from the Midwest, which usually surprises people when I first meet them. And I’m an only child!
What are your favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family?
I definitely want to get to more of the trails in Maine, both in Acadia and elsewhere.
What inspired you to intern with Sebago Technics?
I took interest in Sebago’s multi-disciplinary approach to tackling projects and the clear tight-knit atmosphere within and across departments.
What do you look forward to in your career?
I look forward to being able to use my course knowledge to contribute to impactful projects, but also look forward to the vast array of things to be learned doing engineering practice.
What do you hope to accomplish throughout your internship?
I hope to finish my internship having shown the company my enthusiasm for learning new skills and procedures within engineering and project delivery, and having shown myself that the opportunity is confirming my interest down this career path.
