Meet our 2021 Summer Interns! We look forward to highlighting our great interns each week in our Intern Spotlight. First up is Jessica Lawson!
Jess is pursuing a degree in Architectural and Engineering Design at Southern Maine Community College. She also holds a Masters degree in Political Science and earned her Electrician’s certificate at SMCC. Jessica is interning with the CAD Team in the Project Delivery group at Sebago. She looks forwards to becoming really fast with the software she works with and being really knowledgeable about what the software can do. One day she would like to mentor someone starting out!
Where do you go to school?
Southern Maine Community College.
What are you studying and why did you choose this major?
I am working on an Associate’s in Architectural and Engineering Design and Drafting and an Electrician’s Certificate. I chose these two because I wanted to change careers and liked the prospects for jobs I can get with these two-year degrees.
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
It’s a tie between CAD Management and Parametric Solid Modeling. I liked CAD Management because of the programming it requires and I liked PSM because I really like working with Solidworks software.
Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?
Wells Beach with my family. Anywhere with a nice beach. Peaks Island.
What three traits define you?
I am tenacious, excitable, and honest.
What are your hobbies?
Gardening, traveling when I can, sewing, going to the beach, camping, refinishing furniture, hanging out with my cat, talking to my mom, and swimming.
If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Salad, but with the caveat that I could switch up the ingredients. You can get pretty creative with salad and I can’t imagine going forever without a good serving of vegetables!
Do you have a hidden talent? If so, tell us about it!
I feel like this is going to come up again, but here goes nothing… I can make a pretty good wild turkey call and get wild turkeys to answer. I am also pretty decent (or at least I used to be) at playing pool.
If you were an animal what would you be and why?
This is a tough one. I think I would be a grizzly bear. You get to sleep all winter when the weather sucks and you are at the top of the food chain. Second choice would be a migratory bird because it would be cool to fly and a bird that travels long distances would get to see a lot.
Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?
Tahiti.
What is the best concert you attended?
The Rolling Stones when Gwen Stefani opened for them in Atlanta. I got to sit very close to the stage because a friend had someone working on the crew and they gave us tickets. I am not a huge Rolling Stones fan, but I have to admit that both performers had incredible shows.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I’ve been to all 50 states and 16 or 17 countries.
What are your favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family?
Camping, hiking, swimming… Really I am open to doing anything outdoors.
What inspired you to intern with Sebago Technics?
It was recommended by a teacher in my program who I have a lot of respect for and I had heard great things about the company in general.
What do you look forward to in your career?
Becoming really fast with the software and being really knowledgeable about what the software can do. It will be cool to be a mentor to someone starting out some day!
