Meet the Team | World Landscape Architecture Month

A day in the life of a Sebago Technics landscape architect and designer looks a little different every day. But the common thread for all of us is the purpose behind our work and the joy we all get from seeing these great spaces experienced by everyone for whom it was designed. Get to know two talented and passionate members of our Landscape Architecture team below!

Brian McMahon – Landscape Designer

Mr. McMahon joined Sebago Technics in July of 2021. Brian graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Landscape Architecture and a minor in Community Planning. As a landscape designer, he has actively worked on projects that contain elements of site analysis, conceptual design, site detailing, graphic renderings, and planting design. Brian hopes to pursue his licensure to become a Registered Landscape Architect in Maine within the upcoming years.

What does Landscape Architecture mean to you?

Landscape Architecture is the ability to intertwine natural and built elements into a specific, cohesive outdoor space.

When/how did you discover that you wanted to become a landscape architect/designer?

Ever since I was a young child, I always loved drawing and being outside. As I grew older, I knew I wanted to pursue a profession that combined my creative background and interest in the natural environment.

What do you like most about the work you do?

I enjoy the diversity of work that comes through our doors on a daily basis; one day you could be working on a landscape plan for a residential-scale project, whereas the next you might be developing a layout for a new school campus or medical facility. The opportunities are endless, and you never know what you might come across on any given day.

What is your favorite/most notable project and why?

My favorite project to date is Lakeside in Norway, Maine. I started working on the project during my internship in the winter of 2020, and I have been actively working on it ever since. It has been an extremely valuable learning experience seeing the project transform from the initial conceptual phase up to producing official construction documents. I am very excited to see what the future holds for this unique development.

When you think about working at Sebago Technics, what makes you proudest or most excited?

I find it most rewarding to be a part of an employee-owned company, and I am proud to work alongside the diverse group of talented individuals that make Sebago Technics what it is. I am especially grateful for the Landscape Architects in the office, as they have provided me with an abundance of knowledge and skills I will be able to use throughout the rest of my professional career.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a landscape architect?

If becoming a landscape architect/designer is something you are seriously interested in pursuing, then don’t hesitate. The work is challenging but extremely rewarding at the same time. There’s nothing like seeing a project you worked on come to life.

Henry Hess, RLA – Landscape Architect

Henry Hess joined Sebago Technics in 2018. He is a Registered Landscape Architect in Maine and brings with him versatile skills in graphic presentation and land planning. Since joining Sebago, Henry has been involved in master planning, site analysis, design, conceptual design, site design, layout, planting design, and has been a support designer on larger projects. Since becoming a Maine Licensed Landscape Architect, Henry manages a number of his own projects with Sebago Technics. His efforts in site design and landscape architecture result in a consistent level of successful sites and landscapes that help shape Maine cities and towns in Maine

What does Landscape Architecture mean to you?

Landscape architecture is shaping space for people to live work and play. It is where the environment meets the built world.

When/how did you discover that you wanted to become a landscape architect/designer?

I have always had a passion for the outdoors and specifically plants, and plants that have multiple uses, whether for construction materials or consumption, or healing properties.

What do you like most about the work you do?

I enjoy creating spaces for people to live work and play. Whether it is a subdivision, a park, a commercial space, or a restaurant where people will sit and enjoy a meal together. Landscape architecture is about creating space for people to be together and to live and work.

What is your favorite/most notable project and why?

My favorite project has been the L.L. Bean headquarters in Freeport. It has a little of everything. It is a place people go to work with an emphasis on getting outside. The building takes advantage of many indoor and outdoor opportunities.

When you think about working at Sebago Technics, what makes you proudest or most excited?

I am very proud to be an employee-owner of Sebago Technics. I am excited by the opportunities to collaborate with multiple disciplines quickly and efficiently solving complex site challenges.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a landscape architect?

Get outside and pay attention! Be observant of your surroundings and recognize places that make you feel comfortable and why! Also – practice, practice, practice, grading, and site design are strong valuable tools in the toolbox for a landscape architect. Oh, and don’t forget to get outside too.
