Employee-Owner Spotlight | Derek Caldwell, PE, PTOE | Senior Transportation Engineer

We are thrilled to announce that Derek Caldwell, PE, PTOE has rejoined the Sebago Technics team as a Senior Transportation Engineer! Derek brings previously spent six years with us in a similar role. He will be instrumental in leading our traffic engineering and operations services. Derek holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Master’s in Civil Engineering-Transportation from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Welcome back, Derek! We are excited to see the incredible impact you will make on our projects and for our clients.


Where did you grow up and what other places have you lived in throughout your life?

Grew up in South Portland, lived in Worcester, MA for college and then Waltham, MA for a while and now have been back in Portland for going on 10 years.

Favorite place(s) to go in Maine?

Western Mountains & Lakes Region 

What was your very first job, and what did you learn from it?

Working at Wendy’s for one summer in high school, I learned to have a dedicated pair of shoes for all the grease. 

What was your journey like to get where you are?

Fairly straightforward. I went to college for civil engineering and have worked a few different public and private sector engineering jobs over the years. Now I’m back at Sebago after a 1-year hiatus.

What are your hobbies outside the office?

Skiing, biking, and hiking.      

What inspired you to work for Sebago Technics?

Past experience!

Favorite thing to do in Maine?

Ski

Top three life highlights?

Getting married to my wife (we first met on the middle school swim team), raising our two sons, and a past trip to Portugal.

Championship T-Ball Coach. 

If you were an animal what would you be?

A moose

Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?

Ski trip to an obscure place in Europe I haven’t heard of yet.

What are your favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family?

Skiing, biking, hiking, and time at family camps

When you think about working at Sebago Technics, what makes you proudest or most excited?

Seeing a project built out no matter the scale, which ends up having a direct positive impact on our roads.
