How many years of experience do you have as a surveyor?
This year, in October, will mark my 9th year in the industry.
When/how did you discover that you wanted to become a surveyor?
Nine years ago, I was given an opportunity to work with a local survey company. The first week on the job I assisted on a 30ac. boundary survey. From the moment I set up over the first station, I knew becoming a surveyor was my career. I’ve enjoyed every moment, and have not looked back.
What do you like most about the work you do?
What I like most about the work I do is that each job is a glimpse back in history, and a puzzle to build. Every day brings a new adventure and challenge from recon on a large boundary, to laying out anchor bolts on a new building. It is a physically and mentally demanding job and I love every moment.
What is your favorite/most notable project and why?
My favorite project thus far would be a project we did in Prospect, Maine. I had the opportunity to survey a 100+ acre parcel. COVID-19 was here, the office was working remotely, and with restrictions, we decided to camp on site with the permission of the land owner. We camped on site for a week and a half, and it rained almost the entire time. During the time surveying, we encountered thunderstorms, wildlife, bridge, stream and railroad crossings, ponds and ravines. This job was exciting at every turn of the instrument and challenging because of the elements. I enjoyed every moment of this project and one I will never forget.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about pursuing a career in surveying?
If someone is interested in surveying, come job shadow with us for a week, ask questions, and try out the equipment. If you enjoy being outdoors and challenging yourself mentally and physically, then survey has it all!
